We have explored the core tenets of Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) and peeked into what a typical session looks like. Now, let’s delve deeper into the human needs and core pains that EFT addresses. Understanding these foundational aspects provides a roadmap for how EFT helps you achieve lasting emotional well-being.

Basic Human Needs:

  • Security and Safety: This is the most fundamental need all humans have in common. We all need to feel safe and secure in our environment, both physically and emotionally.
  • Autonomy and Competence: Humans have a natural desire for control and the ability to freely make our own choices. We also want to feel competent and capable in our lives.
  • Connection and Belonging: Feeling connected to others is essential for emotional well-being. We crave belonging, love, and acceptance.
  • Self-Esteem and Worth: A healthy sense of self-worth is crucial for navigating life’s challenges. We all want to feel valued and appreciated.

In our lives, we are likely to  experience pain when our needs are not met by developmentally significant others or loved ones. These painful experiences may eventually accumulate and develop into “core pains”. The most significant emotions attached to these “core pains” are fear, shame and sadness. The following are some examples of core pains that may arise from unmet needs.

Core Pains:

  • Fear of Abandonment: When our need for connection and belonging goes unmet, or when we experience rejection, we might experience a fear of being abandoned or isolated. This can manifest as anxiety, attachment issues, difficulty in opening up to others or trusting others.
  • Shame and Inadequacy: If our need for self-worth is not met, we might develop feelings of shame or inadequacy. This can lead to low self-esteem, self-criticism, and difficulty taking risks.
  • Anger and Frustration: When our needs for security, autonomy, or connection are thwarted, anger and frustration are natural responses. However, the inability to express or manage these emotions effectively can lead to destructive behaviours.
  • Feeling Lost and Powerless: If our need for competence and control is not met, we might feel lost and powerless. This can manifest as depression, anxiety, or difficulty making decisions.

By addressing these basic needs and core pains, EFT aims to:

  • Illuminate Your Needs: EFThelps you understand your basic needs, and focuses on the emotional issues tied to your unmet needs
  • Increase Emotional Awareness: EFT helps you identify and understand your core pains and underlying emotions, leading to greater self-compassion and acceptance.
  • Develop Secure Attachments: By processing emotions related to attachment insecurities, EFT can help you build healthier, more trusting relationships.
  • Boost Self-Esteem: EFT promotes self-acceptance and helps you challenge negative self-beliefs, leading to a stronger sense of self-worth.
  • Improve Emotional Regulation: EFT equips you with tools to manage difficult emotions in a healthy way, reducing anxiety, depression, and anger.
  • Empower You: EFT empowers you to take control of your emotional life and navigate challenges with greater agency, resilience and confidence.

This list is not exhaustive, but it provides a solid foundation for understanding how EFT tackles unmet needs and core pains to help you achieve a more fulfilling emotional experience.
