What is Transdiagnostic?
The transdiagnostic approach is a newer development in understanding psychopathology. It posits that psychiatric disorders (e.g. depression or anxiety) have more in common than traditionally assumed as discreet or distinct.
The rationale for developing transdiagnostic protocols is based on a number of factors; shared etiology and maintenance mechanisms, high co-morbidity, hypothesising that discrete disorders may be underpinned by common psychological vulnerabilities.
What is Transdiagnostic Emotion-Focused Therapy?
Transdiagnostic Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT-T) focuses on the diagnostic cluster of depression, anxiety, and related disorders, such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). EFT-T differentiates itself from symptom-level treatment modality and works at a deeper underlying emotional vulnerability. This is by accessing and then transforming primary maladaptive emotion.
EFT-T targets clusters of symptoms labelled as mood disorders by focusing on the underlying vulnerability shared by these diagnostic categories. This shared emotional vulnerability appears to be centered around chronic painful emotions of sadness/loneliness, shame, and fear/terror.
