For our second installment of Webinars on Emotion-Focused Therapy for Couples (EFT-C) with Dr Catalina Woldarsky Meneses, we are exploring the crucial role of Self-Soothing in Couples’ Therapy.
What is Emotion-Focused Therapy for Couples?
Emotion-Focused Therapy for Couples (EFT-C), developed by Leslie Greenberg and Rhonda Goldman, is a therapeutic approach designed to address relational conflicts and emotional injuries by enhancing couples’ abilities in affect regulation. While it originated from a shared model with Sue Johnson’s Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) in the mid-1980s, Greenberg’s EFT-C has evolved to incorporate a broader theoretical framework and distinct clinical emphases.
What is Self-Soothing?
Self-soothing is first developed and applied in individual EFT work. It is incorporated into working with couples, in a joint setting. It addresses the resolution of emotional pain stemming from unmet childhood needs that influence couple interaction. This intervention is crucial for achieving self-change and enduring relationship transformation in couples.
When to use Self-Soothing?
Self-soothing is particularly important when partners are unavailable or initially inaccessible for other-soothing. It is also used when difficulties are traced to core identity concerns e.g. feeling “fundamentally flawed” or “worthless”. This intervention is most relevant when one partner experiences “deep shame”. This shame persists despite acceptance from a partner.
