About Emotion-Focused Therapy

As helping professionals, we are in the business of change!

Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) is about changing emotion with emotion. We help clients transform painful debilitating and distressing emotion into one that is adaptive. EFT is an empirically-supported treatment modality that holds emotions as centrally important in human functioning. It involves a therapeutic stance that combines person-centered  “following” and neo-humanistic “guiding”, in the client’s experiential process. It views emotion as the fundamental datum of human experience. EFT recognizes the importance of meaning making, and views emotion and cognition as inextricably intertwined.

Aim of Workshop

This 3-day training provides a basic understanding of the theoretical foundation of EFT. It introduces key EFT interventions. Learners would be able to appreciate the workings of these interventions.

Details of Workshop

Duration and Time: 3-day, 9am – 5pm

Pre-requisite: Participants must have completed EFT Module 1

Synopsis

EFT has two major forms of chair work: Empty Chair work; and Two Chair work. Module 2 focuses on Empty Chair work also referred to as “unfinished business” (UFB). This refers to unresolved emotional pain and unmet needs from past significant relationships. These are relationships with parents, caregivers, or even authority figures. These emotional wounds have not been fully processed or healed. They stem from painful experiences like:

  • Chronic neglect or emotional abandonment: A lack of consistent emotional support or presence.
  • Absence of warmth and caring: Feeling a lack of affection or nurture.
  • Criticism or rejection: Not being allowed to be oneself or not being accepted for who one is.
  • Conditional support or love: Feeling that love or support was only given under certain circumstances.
  • Fear of attachment: Experiences that led to a fear of forming close bonds.
  • Betrayals or disappointments: Significant relational hurts that were not addressed.

Unfinished business helps clients deal with events of the past. In this workshop, we introduce a way of working to help clients find an organic way out of current relational difficulties. This is called resolving “Current Inter-personal Conflict”. It is based on the process model of “unfinished business”.

There are important component skills when undertaking “unfinished business”. They are:

  • Triangle of contact in UFB
  • Psychological contact with the person in the empty chair
  • Access and express cycle

Another EFT Task is Systematic Evocative Unfolding. It is a task used to help clients explore and reprocess puzzling, problematic, or unexpected emotional reactions to a particular situation or event. It is a structured yet flexible process designed to deepen emotional processing and gain insight into the meaning and importance of these reactions.

In EFT, empathy is not just a therapeutic skill. It is a fundamental component for healing. An ’empathically-attuned therapeutic relationship’ is needed to facilitate change. In Module 2, we help participants  develop this quality of attunement to affect. The “Channel of Receptivity” exercises will help open up participants’ perceptual faculties.

Psychology Safety in Workshops

Psychological safety is the creation of a learning environment where  participants feel secured to express their true emotions, vulnerabilities, and needs without fear of judgment, criticism, rejection, or negative repercussions. It’s a foundational element that allows for the deep emotional work central to EFT. Efforts and time are allocated to foster and maintain this safety element throughout the three day workshop.
