About Emotion-Focused Therapy

Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) is about changing emotion with emotion. It is founded on careful analysis of the meanings and contributions of emotions to human experience. More importantly, how emotion is the “mechanism of change” in psychotherapy. This focus leads both therapist and client toward strategies that promote the awareness, acceptance, expression, utilization, regulation, and transformation of emotion. The goals of EFT are strengthening the self, regulating affect, and creating new meaning.

Aim of Workshop

This intensive three-day training is the last of of three Modules towards EFT certification. Module 3 will dive deeply into essential elements of the EFT Therapist’s repertoire: Self-Self Work, Case Formulation, and Empathy.

Details of Workshop

Duration and Time: 3 days, 9am – 5pm

Pre-requisite: Participants must have completed EFT Module 2

Synopsis

EFT Module 3 dives deeper into several major pieces of work in EFT: “Self-Self” Work, Case Formulation and Empathy. Self-Self work refers to the relationships between two different parts of the Self. It is commonly referred to as “Self-Self” work as opposed to “Self-Other” work, which refers to a relationship with someone else. This area of work has traditionally been referred to as Splits in that different parts of the Self are divided or split.

The common tasks in Self-Self work are:

  • Self-evaluation or self-cohesive Split
  • Anxiety Split
  • Decisional Split
  • Self-interruption Split
  • Self-annihilation Split

Second, we explore Case Formulation in EFT. It takes on the Humanistic ethos. The key tenet posits that clients are experts on their lives, while the EFT practitioner is the expert on the change process. Therefore, Case Formulation involves both the expertise of the EFT practitioner and active participation of the client. In this workshop, we discuss how the client is involved in the formulation, and how the EFT practitioner manages situations where client and practitioner have differing views on the case at hand. EFT Case Formulation is highly dynamic, and how this impacts the therapy process will be explored.

Lastly, the workshop explores Empathy from an EFT lens. Empathy is both foundational and aspirational. It is both a skill and an attitude. How then can an EFT practitioner be in the   constant process of growing in their empathy capacity?  In this workshop, the “deliberate practice” methodology of skills learning will be applied for learners to further enhance their empathic quotient.

Other practical aspects of EFT will also be discussed, which include:

  • How to do an Intake in EFT?
  • How do you start an EFT session?
  • How do you end an EFT session?
  • How to write EFT clinical notes?
  • How not to take notes during a session?

Learning Objectives

  • To understand the processes of Self-Self work and its resolutions
  • To apply the processes of Self-Self work via the Emotional Deepening Model
  • To understand the philosophical underpinnings of Case Formulation in EFT
  • To apply Case Formulation from an EFT lens
  • To sharpen learners’ Empathic responses through deliberate practice
  • To understand some of EFT’s practices (e.g. Intake, Start and End of Sessions)
